SFC (Retired) Luther Andrew Smith, Jr., 86, of Hattiesburg, MS and formally of Ft. Benning, GA passed away late Thursday evening, September 26, 2019 at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am EST on Monday, October 7, 2019 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City.  Interment with full Military Honors will follow at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Monday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 am EST at the funeral home in Phenix City.

Mr. Smith was born October 25, 1932 in Lumberton, MS, son of the late Luther Andrew Smith, Sr. and Irene Johnson Smith.  He served our country with great pride in the United States Army and was retired with 26 years of service.  After his service career, he had the honor to work with Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg and was retired with 20 dedicated years.  He enjoyed fishing, watching western movies, and gardening. He had a great love for music.  He loved telling stories about his travels and military career, but his greatest joy was sharing time with his wife and family and all his grandchildren.  He loved everyone, and he was a Southern Baptist by faith.  Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lynwood Smith, and Leroy Smith, and one sister, Devon Smith.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Betty Lou Alexander Smith, son, Keith Smith and wife Theresa, daughter, Donna Smith Sherrill and husband Randy, (3) grandchildren, Chris Sherrill (Jennifer), Lindsay Tate (Terry), and Keith Smith. Jr., (6) great grandchildren; Alex Sherrill, Taylor Sherrill, Hannah Sherrill, and Sadie Sherrill, Lila Katherine Tate, and William Tate, and numerous other loving family members.

In lieu of flowers, the request contributions to the Wounded Warriors Foundation in memory of SFC (Retired) Luther Andrew Smith, Jr.
